There are a variety of recreational opportunities and points of interest in and around Cornelius. The city's Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of programs for both children and adults. In addition, there are seven parks, two of which are lakefront areas. Each park and facility offers different outdoor amenities including basketball courts, baseball and soccer fields, playground equipment and picnic areas. The highly anticipated Recreation Station will be completed in 2004. This new center is proposed to be an indoor gymnasium and recreation center located in the heart of Cornelius.

Several attractions such as the Latta Plantation Nature Preserve, the North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame and Charlotte Metro Zoo are all also a short distance away.

There are several shopping centers located throughout Cornelius for resident's everyday needs. The newly renovated downtown area offers both everyday and unique items. The Concord Mall, the second largest mall in North Carolina, is located nearby and features more than 200 plus stores (retail, outlet, specialty and department), restaurants and a movie theatre.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District is known for its excellent staff and outstanding student academic achievements. The district was recently selected as one of the first school systems in the nation to award Advanced Placement diplomas with 70 students receiving the distinction. The district also has a very high rate of National Merit Scholars, a program that honors the nation's brightest students who meet rigorous standards.
